LEAST ASPECTED
PLANETS - CONTENT CITATION TO ROB COUTEAU
STANDARD
ASTROCARTOGRAPHY
Your Psyche is literally an energy field with a
defined structure and periodic, changing cyclic flow. This field operates
Within time and space and interfaces between your
heart (soul) and the physical world. The psyche while internal is also
Anchored in the physical and outer world – the
internal part is the planet which at your birth, had the least number of angles
Forming with other planets in the sky.
Summary definition
for the (LAP) least aspected or
Transcendental planet (LAP)
Symbolic representation of the core level self, the
soul. Represents the structure and form of our life purpose and
Scope of most meaningful activity.
The twin counterpart to the LAP is the (MAP)
most aspected planet which tends to mirror
more trivial parts of
The persons nature and mind. The MAP tends to
be collection of repetitive behavior patterns expressive of the
More mundane parts of the ego. The map tends to
have many aspects or angular relations to other planets and
Due to these many relations can be a source of background
noise even chaos for a persons conscious
awareness.
At birth
straight and curved lines representing planets, rising, setting, and their four
corner positions of ASC,DESC,MC, IC
over earth are
generated. An example might be a bell curve displayed on may representing
Venus in its setting position
curving over western
Europe with a straight vertical line over the USA could show its MC position
(noon).
At birth, places of
planets on the map imbue related quality for person if they go there.
Qualities of planets
tend to be stronger and more intense on the places / cities falling under or
close to where those lines are. The significant missing piece from this however
is determining why people experience overall success in life In
one location as opposed to another. The implication here is that a
primary, foundational and binding Principle exists that that facilitates the
fine filtering and differentiation of locations to determine probabilities Of success vs failure. Key locations
associated with specific planets turned out to
often be associated with the least aspected planet
in the Persons natal chart, meaning the planet with the smallest number of
angular relations or other special positional Characteristics, with other
planets. These angular relations are called aspects. The
least aspected planet has less major and
minor aspects or aspects to the MC or ASC ( MC = Mid
Heaven - noon position, ASC = Ascendant – rising position). Historically the
least aspected planet (LAP) was thought to
represent a disassociated, isolated part of the psyche floating along in its
own bubble and not well integrated with the rest of the sense of self.
Rob Couteau through a series of comprehensive case studies discovered
this was actually the opposite of this notion.
The LAP turns out to be the primary core of the self. While it lacks
having many aspect relations to other planets it also operates in a more
‘noise
free’ environment. The concept is similar and analgous to
the fundamental tone in music theory, along the lines
Of imaging a music
piece that is written for example ‘in the note of “c”. This could also be
likened to a prism where
Many colours may
be seen, but the fundamental primary colour would be the ‘white’ part
of the light from which all the
Other colours are
born. Couteau feels that this free agent part of the psyche
represents the main character and spiritual
Sense of self, the
goals and purpose of the central theme of our lives. He refers to the LAP
as
‘…the archetypal
portrait of what we are at a core level’
Couteau refers
to the LAP as the ‘Transcendental Planet’ which he feels serves as a connector
between
Shallower layers of
consciousness represented by the most aspected planets
(MAP) and the inner true sense
Of self.
Functionally the LAP bridges between habitual behavior ( not
always in our best interest) and the
Deep well springs of
our souls aspirations for self
actualization. Couteau calls this ‘transcendental’ because
The LAP can serve to
help us rise above our conditioning anchored to the ego and actually
realize a
Sort of
superconductive state of meaningful realization of who we are meant to be and
to fulfill our life
Purpose.
In most peoples charts
there are three LAPS ;
Primary
Secondary
Tertiary
The locations
associated with the Primary LAP tend to induce recurrent phenomena for the
person relocating
There often
associated with a profound life experience, breakthrough
or meaningful and significant contact.
This type of location
is also often associated with the person creating a profound piece of work, achieving
Positive notoriety
and even receiving recognition and wide acclaim for what they produce.
Polarized to an
opposite state of nature than the LAP, the MAP is essential a pivot point
within ones nature around which multiple qualities / influences
Whirl similar to the idea of a merry go round where the center of MAP is
literally the ‘Most Aspected Planet’,
around which instead of carousel Seats, other planets spin around it, but not
simply in a horizontal circle but from many different angles. So many
energies
Are at play at once
the most aspected planet has a challenging
time focusing its energy into a meaningful conscious expression.
The danger then
becomes for the MAP to get stuck in a rut of meaningless repetitive habits
often degenerating into trivial lower level
Ego caricatures of
what the true self is and should be expressing the very opposite of what the
LAP can potentially produce that
Being the best
expression in inner talent and success. The MAP can reveal however,
what the likely shadow elements and obstructions
Are in our lives and
inner self – but we would not likely want
to live or relocate to areas where the MAP is dominant.
MAPs are “too busy”,
overdoing and releasing too much energy into activities that do
not truly serve the true life purpose
Or integrity of
wholeness for the psyche. The MAP is like an independent fractured
part of the self flip flopping around in a
Disharmonious state
with the other planetary energies in the chart and the main core of the psyche ( LAP ). Hyperactive fruitless
Pursuits and efforts
along with trivial expressions of psychic energy are what one can expect from
locations where the MAP
Is strong where as the LAP when association with a location tends to
yield the most productive and meaningful harnessing of our
creative power.
The natal chart is
like an electronic circuit that can ‘short out’ when the proper functioning of
the bundles of psychic impulses represented by
The planets are
distorted by the MAP absorbing and redirecting too much energy. Consider for
example if a person has their moon as the
MAP, this tends
towards higher probabilities of emotional imbalance ;
hypo or hyper wherein sudden infantile outbursts can erupt or swing
To emotional
repression obstructing the proper utility of the persons energy via the
LAP. The proper flow of energy to the LAP is essentially
Pinched off and
unavailable as the MAP is draining too much of it away. Management
solutions help rebalance this flow, starting with awareness And
then taking conscious action. A person with a lunar MAP in a hyper state
would need to become aware and then learn to practice greater emotional
detachment to regulate the MAP ( leading, or
most aspected energy / planet) – then
intentionally redirect back to the LAP so the important creative tasks can be
performed.
This process allows
us to “ground” the potentially chaotic energies in our chart (the MAP) by
harnessing its energy to serve the LAP
And to channel the
energy into accomplishing tasks that serve the greater purpose of the
self. This process when activated and healthy
Further allows the
MAP to learn and experience its own appropriate expression.
Ultimately, Couteau emphasizes
that the “ultimate focal point” of the horoscope IS the LAP. All energies
should be directed through this
Singular symbol.
The LAP is strongly
supported in its function via the secondary, tertiary LAPS. What are
these and why do they matter?
Keep in mind that
when we say “LEAST ASPECTED PLANET”, again here we simply mean that ‘aspects’
are angles or angular relations
Between planets
occurring in the chart. There are many different kinds of angles that
form but only certain angles matter as only certain
Angles are able to
carry or transmit significant levels of force and of these angles certain types
carry certain qualities of force, some being
Harmonious and
vitalizing others discordant and potentially devitalizing.
Therefore since the planet with the least number of forces acting upon it will
“ring” in a purer tone with less noise, then so too will other
Planets in the chart
tend to ring more pure when they have lesser number of
aspects than those planets with many.
As such, those
planets with lesser aspects / angles of force acting on them, will tend to
function in supportive, serving, facilitating roles
To the LAP.
Practically this
means, that where the LAP represents a core part of your psyche, being the core
field of energy that is really
“YOU” and represents
your life purpose, then so to do the secondary and tertiary LAP planets also
represent highly significant parts
Of your psyche which
are compatible yet different to the LAP.
Essentially these are
the parts of your mind which may for example, vocalize support in your internal
talk or thought process when the
LAP is active and
dominant, in charge. THE LAP is the boss and the
secondary, tertiary LAP are the executive assistant and secretary
Within the domain of
the self.
Interestingly, when
we superimpose the individual planetary lines representing each of these three
planets onto a global map we can
Now filter out many
places that may have previously been seen in a more shallow
perspective of only the geo natal and transiting forces
As being favourable or
less favourable. When we identify those places on the map
corresponding to these LAPs we can zero in, exactly
To those areas that
have the greatest probabilities for growth, stability, opportunity and
ultimately the best chance we can possibly have for actualization
and we can much more easily avoid those areas that could be problematic, even
though when using the simpler standard model of just historic astrocartography we may not have been able to detect
the possibility for stress in those locations.
Generally, in
historic traditional astrocartography which
does have a good track record for use, the basic idea and premise was to match
A desired quality in
life to where that quality was most likely physically present as indicated by
the planetary association of a place.
For example, if a
person was seeking opportunity, good luck, expanding fortune the default go to has been to determine where on the global
Map the Jupiter line
fell and then to try to match cities along that line to Jupiter. The
premise here is that if a city falls on the Jupiter line for a
Persons natal chart
then they should tend to do quite well. Generally
this premise has held up well for many people and for a long time,
However over time it has also been found that this sometimes doesn’t actually
happen this way, for example a person may go to a city
On theuir Jupiter line and they find out from day to day
living experience that while they are indeed experiencing Jupiter type
qualities such
As they get
opportunities, they seem to get good luck especially at first however after
they have been at the new location for at least one lunar
cycle or
approximately 29 days, unnerving scenarios can start to settle in usually in
the form of the more chaotic, noisy even disharmonious properties of Jupiter
such as expanding too fast, over indulging, imbalanced
growth. What happened and why? Unbenknownst to
the person, they did not realize or know in advance that Jupiter was actually the MAP in their chart and therefore the energy was
prone towards distortion. For them it would have been better to locate to
an area resident on or in close proximity to their LAPs ;
primary, secondary or tertiary.
======
FOLLOWING ARE ARTICLE
EXCERPTS OF ROB COUTEAUS WRITINGS WHICH EXPLAIN IN GREATER DETAIL
NUANCES OF THIS METHOD ;
As a footnote to this, the Secondary LAP will sometimes appear to be
operating in an atypical manner. The second-least aspected planet
is so intimately involved with the Primary LAP that, although it remains one of
the most active energies in the chart, it acts in such accord with the Primary
LAP that, to the unskilled observer, its presence will seem negligible. For
example, we have a client with Primary Jupiter and Secondary Mars: an energetic
man who can work for many hours without interruption and whose strongest
feelings of adventure, ambition, and drive are focused on a typically Jupiterian quest
for things related to the “codified wisdom of the soul”: the social or
institutional preservation of fine art, philosophy, spirituality: the
experience of personal enrichment upon making contact with a “soulful” culture.
Therefore, his Secondary Mars lends an immense vitality to things of a Jupiterian nature.
His Mars manifests in various other ways: dynamic male friendships, an interest
in erotic art, a sense of “fighting” (Mars) for what is “ethically” right
(Jupiter), a need to “battle” (Mars) within the social-collective so that the
soul will be “preserved and expanded” (Jupiter) within yin-oriented
institutions (e.g., cultural institutions of higher learning and spirituality
such as colleges, universities, and churches). Thus, we have an active and
dynamic Mars ear¬nestly applying itself to
the soul mission, the latter symbolized by Primary Jupiter.
The significance of these Primary and Secondary Transcendental pairings
is further illustrated by their presence in the horoscope sectors or “houses.”1
While the least aspected planet is the
symbolic focal point of the psyche, the horoscope house that hosts the Primary
Transcendental–the “Transcendental House”–reveals how and where this crucial
energy will most dynamically and creatively manifest. Although more research
needs to be done regarding this phenomenon, I make occasional references to
the Tran¬scendental House throughout this
work.
1. Nodes, Travel, and
the Triple-zero Transcendental
“Where do I belong?”
is the essential question in astrocartography.
And it is the question most often asked by clients, as well. As the previous
biographical studies illustrate, Transcendental experiences of a singular
nature often occur under the lines of the least aspected planets.
While the focus of our study has been on the Primary through Tertiary Transcendentals,
other considerations must be taken into account when
analyzing astro-maps:
In general, planets
with a rating of “130” or less should be considered as somewhat Transcendental,
no matter where they fall on the overall scale of rating (e.g., third, fourth,
or fifth least aspected planet etc.).
Another consideration
involves the Transcendental Midpoint-Field (TMF) formed by the line of the
Primary,
Secondary, and/or
Tertiary Transcen-dental. The importance of this
phenomenon should now be clear; its signifi¬cance is
illustrated in many of the previous studies. Bearing in mind what we have said
about planetary rating, however, additional factors come into play in the
analysis of a client’s TMF. For example, if the Primary Transcenden¬tal receives a low rating (e.g., 021), and
the Secondary Transcendental receives a rating well above the 130 range (e.g.,
221), then the geographical area near the Primary Transcen¬dental line
is given greater significance than the area in the center of the TMF. (“Near”
being several longitudinal degrees on either side of the line.) In cases where
the Primary and Secondary are each 130 or less, then the area in the center of
the TMF is as significant as that of the area surrounding the Primary
Transcendental line. In addition, when the fourth- or fifth least aspected planets are below 130, and when these lines
enter into the TMF of the Primary, Second¬ary,
or Tertiary Planets, then such areas should be examined for a Transcendental
potential.
Finally, the themes symbolized by the Primary, Secondary, and Tertiary Tran¬scendentals must be considered carefully:
singularly and in combination with each other, as “planetary pairings.” This
offers the client a fuller comprehension of the symbols reflected in his astrocartography. For example, someone with Primary
Sun, Second¬ary Mars,
and Tertiary Saturn is, thematically speaking, focused on the spectrum of yang
(or masculine) planets: moving from a “collective” (Saturn) to an “interactive”
(Mars) and finally toward a “personal perspective” (Primary Sun). Another way
of saying this might be to remark that the “individualizing” of the Sun is
refined through the “interaction” of Mars and “worked through to completion”
with Saturn. A client with entirely yin (or feminine) planets, such as the poet
Elizabeth Browning (whose four least aspected planets
were each yin), would be more focused on the soulful, “merging” aspect of
psychic energy rather than on the identity-building and -shedding quality of
yang energy (the latter is characterized by a “separating” quality). Browning’s Transcendental
were Venus (112), Neptune (102), Moon (030), and Jupiter (010).
Sometimes, the Primary and Secondary Transcendentals each
reflect a complimentary level of ontological development. For example, the
pairing of Sun / Moon describes the most personal or individual development of
“self” (Sun) and “soul” (Moon) experience. Mars / Venus continue this devel¬opment into the interpersonal level of
relationship, with complimentary qualities such as “desire” (Mars) and
“harmony” (Venus). Jupiter / Sat¬urn symbolize
social-collective issues, such as “social organization” (Saturn) and
“collective representations of the soul” (Jupiter). Neptune / Pluto emphasize
transpersonal dimensions of being, including experiences that reflect a
“transcendence of personal identity” (Pluto) and a “merging of the personal
soul with the anima mundi or world soul” (Neptune). With Mercury and
Uranus–planetary energies that either combine (Mer¬cury)
or transcend (Uranus) yin and yang categories–we have the formation of
“cognition and communication” (Mercury) combined with a “divinely
inspired, intu¬itively reformed
consciousness” (Uranus). The Uranus / Mercury Transcendental pairing unites
“knowledge of what we are” (Mercury) with the gnosis of “what we are meant to
be” (Uranus). As illustrated in our biographies, these represent several
possible planetary pairings.
While the Primary and Secondary Transcendentals are easy to
calculate (see appendix A), there remains the question of which location–out of
all possible places where a Tran¬scendental line
may fall–is the best one? The Transcendental Midpoint-Field (TMF), especially
at its narrowest, most potent point, often helps to further refine the
selection process. The additional presence of a Tertiary Tran¬scendental moving through the TMF may further
narrow the choice, as would the addition of other underaspected planets
(rated 130 or less) that pass through a TMF.
Other Considerations
i. Factors in the overall natal chart
Besides the
calculation of least- to most aspected, the
horoscope must be analyzed in its entirety, as this will further clarify the
nature of particular aspects, espe¬cially regarding
their functioning in the horoscope as a synthetic whole. But the sys¬tem of gauging the underaspected nature
of certain planets provides us with a fundamental baseline that can easily be
applied to a large number of charts and which reveals
a clearer picture of the spectrum of planetary potency.
In general, a planet with three or more major aspects presents a qualita¬tively different form of energy (perhaps, even
a blockage) than a planet with only one major aspect. The expression of this
qualitative difference is particularly obvious in our Transcendental
biographies.
ii. On determining
the Primary Transcendental when several planets are equally underaspected
In horoscopes in
which most of the planets receive a large number of
aspects (e.g., three or more major aspects [300]), with one or two planets
receiving zero-to-one major aspect (000-100), the latter group of underaspected planets is clearly Transcendental in
relation to the overaspected planets.
Relocation to the region of these key Tran-scendentals will
enhance the planetary principles in question and help the native to focus on
his goals.
In horoscopes in which several planets are rated equally (e.g., sev-eral with a 112 aspect
rating), it is more difficult to determine the true Pri-mary or
Secondary Transcendental. In such cases, the important thing to remember is
that an understanding of the symbolism of the Transcendentals (and
the specific goals they portray) is of greater value than trying to precisely
determine the Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary Transcendental. The appearance of
several equally underaspected planets may
indicate that there is not a single Primary Tran¬scendental.
On the other hand, by studying the core symbols, the client may be able to
pinpoint a key Transcendental factor within his chart. (By all means: listen to
the client!)
Likewise, in horoscopes with planets that are rated almost the same in
numerical strength, it is difficult to determine the true Primary
Transcendental. For example, Uranus (100), Venus (101), and Mars (102), may be
so close in their numerical rating that it seems questionable to distinguish
between them.
A more important question might revolve around the study of the
Transcendental Midpoint-Field, as two or three of these least aspected planets may form a pattern (of wedge-shaped
or parallel lines) in proximity to each other, indicating that the area between
them is highly charged (and therefore, is filled with positive potential). An
adequate collection of biographical information may indicate that significant
Transcendental experiences have already occurred in certain regions within this
field, therefore corroborating its significance. In studying the horoscope of a
famous person, the significance of a particular loca¬tion may
not become apparent until the areas formed between the Primary and
Secondary Transcendentals are highlighted as Transcendental
Midpoint-Fields: these will then reveal regions of central significance in the
biography. (Numerous examples of this are included here.)
Theoretical elements
in need of additional research
Areas worthy of additional research include:
•The role of the
North Node in astrocartography (and
especially its relationship to the Primary Transcendental or to other key Transcendentals).
•The role of the
“triple-zero” Transcendental: a planet lacking traditional major, minor,
or Midheaven-Ascendant aspects.
i. The Transcendental Node
The Moon’s Nodes
signify two points in space, 180 degrees apart, where the orbit of the Moon
crosses the orbital plane of the earth (like two interlocking circles that
touch at the opposite points of their shared axis). Visualizing the earth’s
orbital plane as a flat, stationary disk, the point at which the Moon’s orbit
rises (from south to north) or “ascends” past the edge of the earth’s orbital
plane is called the Ascending or North Node; the point formed by the
north-to-south circular move¬ment past the
circumference of the earth’s orbital plane is called the South or Descending
Node. In the past, these were known as the Dragon’s Head (Caput Draconis)
and the Dragon’s Tail (Cauda Draconis). Astronomically, they correspond to
the points of the solar and lunar eclipse. According to an ancient myth, a
dragon inhabits these points: he swal¬lows the
orbiting bodies as they transit past his lair. In India, they are known by the
Sanskrit terms Rahu and Kethu.2 Until recently, their meaning has
generally been accorded greater sig¬nificance in
Hindu astrology than it has in Western horoscope.
Because the Moon’s yin symbolism is concerned with emotions and emo¬tionally based unions, the Moon’s Nodes are
interpreted as having something to do with relationships. Robert Hand regards
them as “an axis of relationship,” with the North Node signifying the formation
of unions and possessing a “joining quality” and the South Node signifying the
dissolution of unions and containing a “separating quality.”3 Because the Nodes
are formed at the point of the Sun’s apparent revolution around the earth, Hand
conjectures they share “something of the quality of the Sun / Moon midpoint.”
If so, then the Nodes are related to the effect that unions or relation¬ships have on the self-identity.
“Self-identity or ego-growth / enhanced through positive unions” (Sun / Moon)
might be a working equation for the North Node, while “outgrown notions of
identity / associated with unions and relationships in the past” might describe
the South Node.
Natal aspects to the North Node reflect a native’s potential for healthy
relationships (in particular, with intimate relationships). As discussed in my
essays on the Transcendental Planets, the Moon triggers a process of yin- or
emotionally toned growth within an individual’s life. Ideally, this yin
development is extended from internal union (within one’s own soul) to the
intimate, inter¬personal union symbolized
by Venus. The placement of the Moon’s Nodes in the horoscope symbolizes one’s
ability to maintain intimate unions and to deepen interpersonal inti¬macy” (Venus), since they reflect an “inherent
emotional stability and strength” (Moon) that the native possesses and which he
experiences on a daily basis as an essential part of
his “identity” (Sun).
In the sense that one must love oneself in order to
love another, the Nodes symbolize the ability to love and to respect oneself.
Indeed, the internal union of self and soul (i.e., the union of yang and yin
within oneself) is the surest indicator of one’s capacity to form a healthy
union with another person. Natal aspects to the North Node portray relationship
patterns that continually surface in life, either in the form of obstacles that
block the healthy formation of relation¬ships or
as opportunities that enhance emotionally based unions.
For example, a natal aspect to the North Node symbolizing a “money
problem” or a “career problem” should also be interpreted as a problem directly
bearing an effect on one’s ability to form and develop significant relationships.4 Conversely, harmonious aspects to the North Node
indicate enduring emotional strength and stability.
Just as the Moon rules emotional patterning in early life and the
resultant formation of autonomous psychological complexes, the Moon’s Nodes
also sym¬bolize “creative complexes” that
enhance one’s growth (North Node) or “destructive com¬plexes”
that one must overcome in order to prevent them from
inhibiting one’s growth (South Node). Just as the Primary Transcendental
describes a spiritual raison d’être, the Transcendental Node reflects a need
for union based on significant emotional values and meaning.
Because the Nodes are qualitatively different from the planetary
principles represented by the celestial spheres, it is impossible to assess the
Transcendental potential of the Node in direct relationship to the planets. The
Node is probably best gauged separately, as regards its own inherent strength
or weakness. If the North Node is underaspected,
receiving only one major aspect and no more than three minor aspects (130), the
geographic line of the North Node will be of some significance if it falls
within the Transcendental region of the Primary, Secondary, or Tertiary
Transcendental. If the North Node receives an aspect rating of more than 130,
however, it should then be considered “non-Transcendental.” (E.g., there is no
such thing as a Primary Transcen-dental Jupiter
and a Secondary Transcendental Node but, rather, a Transcendental Node or a
non-Transcendental Node, either of which will accompany a Primary Jupiter (or
some other Primary Planet) in the composition of a Transcendental
portrait.)
The astrocartog¬raphy line of the
North Node may indicate locations where important personal meetings have
occurred; it may also point to the birthplace of people who have played an
important role in the life of the native. The only other “constant” in my
experience regarding this symbol has been that the Transcendental Node regions*
are especially important when they coincide with the vicinity of the Primary or
Secondary Planet or with the Transcendental Midpoint-Field formed between
them.
____________________
* Again, the
Transcendental Node contains no more than one major and three minor (130 or
less) planetary aspects.
ii. The triple-zero
Transcendental
A planet is
considered a “triple-zero” when it receives no traditional major, minor,
or Midheaven-Ascendant aspects (000). Because the “triple-zero” is rela¬tively rare, more work will have to be done to
ascertain the difference between the “triple-zero” and other forms of
Transcendental energy.*
____________________
* Technically
speaking, any angle of separation between planets represents an aspect of some
sort but not necessary one recognized as having a widespread traditional
meaning or generally agreed upon importance. In that sense, there are no astronomically unaspected planets,
although we can speak of underaspected planets
in the context of tradi¬tional astrological
assumptions.
IV. On the Nature of
the Transcendental Energy
3. Transcendental
Planets
Travel or relocation
to geographic areas under the Ascendant, Midheaven, Descendant, or Imum Coeli (apparent
midnight) positions of the least aspected planet
may result in an enhancing of the energy, so that such energies–already
operating in a highly numinous manner–are further developed as key determining
forces in the life of the native. Such Transcendental energies form a singular,
creative focus in life, uniting the conscious will with the larger will of the
transpersonal Self.
The evolution of planetary energies into a spiritually “higher” or
soulfully “deeper” awareness is, however, no simple process. Besides physical
relocation to the vicinity (or “line”) of the Transcendental Planet, an
understanding of the various planetary symbols is essential if one is to take
full advantage of the opportunities that may unfold under such Transcendental
locales.
This progressive
energetic growth and development is one that proceeds from the inner-orbiting-
to the outer-orbiting planets; and from the yin (soulful/Eros) to the yang
(spiritual/ Logos) planetary levels of development. In addition, the dynamic
interrelationship of the various planetary forces (e.g., least aspected or Transcendental Planets working with or
against most aspected or Leading Planets)
and the various methods (e.g., of both tradi¬tional and
Transcendental Astrology) of viewing and coming to understand their essential
core-meanings are treated at length and from an entirely new perspective.
1. Psychic Inflation
and the Misuse of Transcendental Energy
the misuse of
transpersonal power always leads to self-destruction. The Greek term hubris
or hybris describes someone whose head is swollen with such forces,
which results in exhibitions of personal grandeur, omnipotence, and
glory.
C. G. Jung, whose work contributed so much to modern psychology (and to
psychological astrology), has identi¬fied a
process that he terms “the inflation of the ego by the archetype,” i.e., by the
forces of the collective unconscious. What he refers to is exemplified by Icarus,
who flies too high and whose ersatz wings melt, resulting in his plunge to the
sea, i.e., he falls not only through the sky but also through the “hole” of his
psychological complex. Thus, he is swallowed by the collective unconscious: the
collective reservoir of archetypal energies that stand at the base of
such per¬sonal complexes. The identification
with (and improper use of) transpersonal, archetypal power results in the
dissolution of his identity.
the message in the
myth is not that man cannot or should not creatively channel the archetypal
forces: rather, it portrays the delicate balance that must be maintained
(“flying” not too high; not too low). And that one must not, under any
circumstance, lose one’s head, i.e., become psychically inflated or identified
with an energy beyond the pale of mere human manufacture, origin, or
comprehension.
His father, Daedalus, warns him to maintain a levelheaded
approach. Daedalus escapes from the island and, with his waxen wings
intact, safely “lands” (Sat¬urn). Father Daedalus embodies
the Saturn principle. He manipulates matter to achieve his ends; he respects
the “laws of limitation,” and he never overreaches himself in the
process.
Primary Transcendentals point
a geographic regions where we are offered a proverbial
"golden opportunity."
VII. Zones of
Intensity:
The Integration of
Least- and Most Aspected Planetary Energies
in Natal Astrology and in Astrocartography.
In certain astro-maps, Leading (or most aspected) lines cross or are found in proximity to the
least aspected or Primary Transcendental
line. The midpoint-field formed by most- and least aspected lines
forms a “Zone of Intensity.”
At the very least, such regions present difficult challenges. These
zones also raise the question of psychic integration: reining in the most aspected energy and channeling it into the Transcendental
goal. Usually, this is a difficult task and many people, when visiting such a
region, either fail to accom¬plish this;
flee the zone because of problems it poses; or (if they are insightful and a
bit lucky) have challenging experiences that form an important part of their
life jour¬ney, especially when such experiences
reflect an integration of the Leading and the Tran¬scendental planet
symbols.
Because I’m not a
deterministic astrologer, I wouldn’t advise someone to never travel to such an
area. In fact, some are up to the challenge of a Zone of Intensity and do well
in such regions (especially those who are consciously involved in the
individuation process, i.e., engaged in psychological or spiritual work). Yet I
have observed many cases in which clients have instinctively avoided such
regions, often for a good reason. Rather than living under a Primary Transcendental
within the Zone of Intensity, they move many miles away and reside under a
Secondary Transcendental and prosper there, instead. (Or they move to the
Tertiary Transcendental when the Primary and Secondary Transcendentals are
each near the Leading Planet lines, i.e., when they are in the Zone of
Intensity and when the Tertiary is the only Transcendental located outside the
zone.)
One of the dangers such zones pose is that some clients are drawn to the
Primary Transcendental even when it falls within a Zone of Intensity. Yet, the
proximity of the most aspected or Leading
Planet in the same region may cause the Primary Transcendental to become
greatly interfered with, to the point that it is usurped, eclipsed, or in some
manner nullified by the Leading Planet energy.
Because such regions are composed of most-aspected energies,
Zones of Intensity often point to regions where we fall prey to hubristic
experiences, i.e., overidentifying with an energy that is
highly aspected within the horoscope and
that is now acti¬vated to an even greater
degree in regions under such Leading Planet lines. While the Leader is
connected to the experience of hubris, the additional dan¬ger the
Zones of Intensity pose is that the spiritual foundation that we rest upon,
which is symbolized by the Primary Transcendental, is disturbed in such a
location, since the overlapping of Leading and Transcendental principles leads
to a distortion of our Transcendental purpose.
Usually, hubristic behavior results in a reversal of fortune or a
“fall.” Zones of Intensity frequently mark regions where historical
personalities overreached, stumbled, or failed to achieve their goals in a
clear, unobstructed manner. What is of special interest is how the nature of
the fall is described so accurately by the symbol of the Leading Planet.
ZONES OF INTENSITY:
When most aspected or Leading Planet lines are in proximity to
least aspected or Transcendental lines, the
result is called a Zone of Inten¬sity. In such
areas, there is an inherant danger that the
most aspected or Leading Planets will
overwhelm or usurp the role of the least aspected or
Transcendental Planet. In such zones, we feel as if we are being pulled, in an
extreme and intense fashion, in two rather different directions: (A) one
direction representing the Tran¬scendental goal
in life, which is symbolized by the least aspected planet;
(B) the other direction representing the hypo- or hyperactive aspects of
consciousness, symbolized by the most aspected or
Leading Planet (i.e., lacking proper measure of expression).
The challenge posed
in such regions is to make such qualitatively different energies work together
in unison. The key to integration is for each to find its appropriate level of
expression. Ideally, the Leader (the most aspected)
should serve the Transcendental (the least aspected)
in some manner. The Leader should not lead: it should
follow. It must be used as a tool rather than followed as a guiding principle.
The latter is the proper role of the Tran¬scendental.
Rather than operating as a split-off or independent agent, the most aspected planet must serve the Transcendental in
achieving its goal.
Such zones present objective existential challenges. We feel called upon
to confront this energetic tug-of-war with the hope of consciously and
constructively resolving it. If one exerts appropriate effort in understanding
the symbolism involved with each particular planet,
this may be possible. The more insight one develops into the nature of
the sym¬bols, the greater the potential for
creative, productive work.
Sometimes, clients travel to such areas for brief visits, dur¬ing which something valuable is learned, but this
often involves a challenging, difficult process.
The role of the
least aspected or Transcendental Planet is
especially highlighted in the follow¬ing manners:
•Birth under or near
the line of Primary Transcendental Planet.
•Relocation (or
temporary travel) near the Primary or Secondary Transcen¬dental.
A temporary relocation often results in a “Transcendental experience”: a
meaningful event that marks one’s psychic development.
•Through insight and
emotional development, often initially expressed as a spiritual yearning.
Remarkable natures learn to unite the ego-will with the unconscious Will. What
the unconscious has in store, in the deepest sense, is often symbolized by the
least aspected planet.1
1. It was in this
sense that Jung spoke of “autonomous movements of the unconscious”: eruptions
of archetypal material, but minus any causal connection to external personal
experience: “It requires a very close contact with the unconscious, and an
understanding of it, for a man to realize that the origin of his mythological
or spiritual experiences is within himself, and that whatever forms these
experiences may appear to take, they do not in fact come from the external
world.” Analytical Psychology, p. 132.
Least Aspected Planet(LAP) -
The nature of the
Primary Transcendental Planet
As the following studies
illustrate, the least aspected planet
symbolizes a primary motivational factor in the lives of ordinary–and
extraordinary–people. The qualities traditionally associated with the planetary
symbol in question will manifest in the forefront of the personality and in the
professional life.
Frequently, there are symbolic parallels between the birth locations,
the travel regions, or the relocations of clients and their least aspected lines. There are also parallels between the
psychological work that many clients are involved with (e.g., spiritual
discipline, meditation, self-reflection) and the symbolism of the LAPs in
question. The Primary Transcen¬dental, the
Secondary Transcendental, and the Transcendental Midpoint-Field (which is
formed between the two) will reflect such keynote symbolism, especially as it
is expressed in daily life.
Often, Primary
Locations symbolically reflect encounters that may result in larger social,
cultural, or historical ramifications, for the Primary Transcendental
corresponds to a singular guiding principle within the life of the native.
The Transcenden¬tal represents a function
that links a creative psychic potential to a conscious awareness of this
potential–and to the conscious means of achieving it. It enables us to
transcend the perimeters of ordinary, ego-bound consciousness by linking the
ego-structure with a more essential center of psychic energy (i.e., the
archetypal, higher Self).
The Transcendental
Midpoint-Field
Frequently, people
are born under a least aspected line, or
are compelled to relocate to its vicinity, but, occasionally, the second
least aspected planet is also found in
proximity to the birthplace or area of relocation. When the lines of the
Primary and Secondary Transcendentals run in proximity to each other,
the area between them is highly charged and will hold a special significance
for the native.
Such regions are
called Transcendental Midpoint-Fields, and in the center of such fields we may
posit a theoretical line representing the midpoint between the Primary and
Secondary Tran¬scendentals.
Occasionally, the
third least aspected planet is in proximity
to the Primary and Secondary Transcendentals; the combined force of all
three may lead to events of great consequence.
Transcendental
Intersections
Occasionally, besides
running in close proximity to each other, the lines of
the Primary and Secondary Transcendentals will intersect. I refer to
these points as Transcendental Intersections.
Such intersections
enhance the power of the Transcendentals in question; they also point
to specific locations of prime biographical importance. Such intersections have
a “rippling effect” upon the entire radius surrounding the point of
intersection (creating a “power circle,” with a diag¬onal of
about ten to fifteen longitudinal degrees).
Leading Planets
The most aspected or Leading Planet often plays a pernicious
role in relocation. In the natal chart, it signifies a psychological function
or complex that will, in some manner, be overcharged and that will express
itself in either a hypo- or a hyperactive manner. In astrocartography,
the line of the Lead¬ing Planet is often
found above geographic regions where we feel “scattered” or where we lack an
ability to bring things into proper focus.
The Leading Planet is rarely expressed in proper measure. Here, we find the
key symbols of how we psy¬chologically overestimate
or underestimate ourselves: our hubris or “inflation” or, con¬versely, our feelings of deflation or defeat. The
Leader signifies psychological points where “too much” or “too little” is
occurring for anything to be accomplished effectively. It symbolizes an energy
that exerts itself inappropriately; therefore, it becomes scat¬tered and diffused.
the proper role of
the most aspected or Leading Planet is to
serve the least aspected or Tran¬scendental Planet in a fundamental manner: to
serve rather than to lead. If the Leader can be yoked to the Transcendental–if
it can follow instead of splitting off and going its own way–the native will
come that much closer to experiencing the “inner round” of psychic wholeness.
Leading Planet
Intersections
When the line of the
most aspected or Leading Planet intersects
the line of the Sec¬ondary or Tertiary
Leader (the second- and third most aspected planets)
a Leading Planet Intersection is formed. Unlike Transcendental Intersections, a
Leading Planet Intersection indicates regions that are often best to avoid
(unless we can develop a keen awareness of the symbolism involved in such
regions and deal with it in an insightful manner).
the presence of such
Leaders, particularly in form¬ing a Leading
Planet Intersection, suggests that, here, she may have “overreached” or in some
way “overestimated” her ability, resulting in “emotional turmoil / and death”
(Leading Moon / Pluto).
1. Astrocartography is based on the time and place of
birth; the maps that result illustrate the planets in their cardinal (or
angular) positions as they appeared at that moment all around the world. f
LAPs are rarely
enhanced onlyby relocation. In general,
they symbolize an internal guiding principle: an inherent raison d’être or
spiritual focal point.

Points of Inner
Focus
Underaspected planets represent a primary focal point: a
core ideal and key element of our spiritual journey. Historical biogra¬phies and the biographies of personal
acquaintances each revealed that the traditional notion of underaspected planets as portraying an “unintegrated element”
in the horoscope was erroneous and that the opposite notion seemed to be true:
that underaspected planets symbolize our
essential psychic nature: what we are meant to do in this particular
lifetime. Subsequent scrutiny of biographical data revealed a par¬allel between horoscopes and the geographical
locations of clients, vis-à-vis least aspected planets.
Traditional
Definitions, Traditional Assumptions
What makes such
energies special is that, when underaspected,
the planetary principle is unfettered. It is pure, so to speak; it is its own
master. It can express itself without being tied down, through aspect, to other
planetary focal points.1 ”
Why did it take so long to discover this astrological principle? It may
simply be a case of believing things without testing them: of allowing ideas to
be passed along, without asking the fundamental question, “Why?” But it may be
something else, as well:
If it is indeed the case that least aspected planets
(LAPs) are rarely, if ever, “untriggered,” and if the reverse is true–that LAPs
signify energies at the forefront of our nature, of our exis¬tential purpose: our essential spirit–then why
did we originally develop the false assumption that underaspected planets
are indicators of “unconsciousness”?
When I first encountered this traditional notion–that underaspected planets reflect “an energy that cannot
be integrated with the other planets: a free-floating, nonintegrated
principle”–I immediately became intrigued. My approach to astrology was
influenced by a psychological orientation, so this naturally raised the ques¬tion: If it’s not operating consciously, then which
region of the psyche does it symbolize? From a psychological point of view, we
often think of a conscious / unconscious duality. Therefore, it was a natural
assumption to conclude that underaspected planets
represent an unconscious complex. But a deeper understanding of archetypal
psychology will result in a more complicated view regarding such matters.
Beyond the Duality of
Triggered-Untriggered; Conscious-Unconscious
We may have become
too habituated to approaching things in a
dualistic fash¬ion, especially as regards what
is “conscious” and what is “unconscious.” For there also exists what the Rudolf
Otto calls the “numinous consciousness”: an experience of the holy: of grace; a
participation with a sacred dimension in life. Otto took the Latin term numen (deity),
and coined the adjective, numinous. Later, Jung borrowed the term from Otto.
Jung wrote that the difference between his psychology and Freud’s was that
Freud focused on theneurotic while Jung was
concerned with the numinous.2 This difference is crucial. It reflects an
essential difference between a sacred and a profane experience: an experience
of grace as opposed to an experience of life as a mere linear succession of
meaningless events.
The LAP is the
central focal point of the birth chart. The LAP represents a distilled or pure
form of psychic energy. The LAP remains free to operate as it pleases: to
express its ???true nature??.
2nd & 3rd
Least Aspected Planet -
The second- and third
least aspected planets further refine this
overall portrait. In addition, they describe how the other planetary principles
function as ???helpers??: energies that, when functioning properly, assist the
LAP in moving us forward, so that the future personality or Self will
eventually manifest.
Most Aspected Planets(MAP) -
With most aspected planets , a rather
different dynamic is at work. While they do not represent a deeper mission, it
is important that such energies be placed fully in the ser?_vice of the least aspected planets.
They must be directed to a central spiritual goal, which is symbolized by the
LAP. Otherwise, psychic one-sidedness will result. When they are properly
directed, however, MAPs serve an important role in help?_ing us progress in the Primary Direction.
"ASTROLOGY
Unaspected Planets
When a planet makes
an aspect with another planet, their combined energies blend and are forced to
work together. A planet that does not form any of the major seven aspects is
said to be unaspected and it operates on
its own pure energy. The abundance of the natural energy of an unaspected planet often dominates the birth chart. It
is quite common for a planet to form only one weak or minor aspect like a
quincunx or semi-sextile and therefore it can be taken as unaspected. Unaspected planets
are nearly always overtly expressed in a person's nature
and they often dominate his chart. When unaspected planets
occur ina birthchart,
they should be observed closely as they have the capacity of changing the
entire pysche of the individual.
Unaspected Sun-
The effect of Sun
being unaspected in ones birthchart would be either good or the native might
turn out to be egocentric and selfish. Most of the people with this
configuration turn out to be successful or famous. King Louis X1V of France and
Vincent Van Gogh possessed an unaspected Sun.
Unaspected Moon-
People with an unaspected Moon, men in particular
have feminine qualities and relate well with women. Usually
it is diffiuclt to control the abundant
energy of Moon but these people can be managed well and they develop a kind
nature. Louis Pasteur had an unaspected Moon
in his birth chart.
Unaspected Mercury-
Those with an unaspected Mercury tend to be likeable, intelligent and adaptable. But they flirt from one thing to
another. They also exhibit lots of confidence , humor
and are sociable. The subjects are usually highly popular like Mahatma Gandhi
who had an unaspected Mercury.
Unaspected Venus-
Venus unaspected in a chart is very rare and those who have
it are very passive, peaceful and lazy ones. Very few of
them become famous or successful. Such people are loving and giving and often
well-loved and pampered in childhood. But they should take care that the
materialistic side of Venus does not preceed the
love element of Venus.
Unaspected Mars-
The raw energy of
Mars when unaspected is capable of
both physcial acheivement and
destruction. The unaspected Mars produces
great athletic ability and deeds of bravery. War heroes and high
ranking military officers have an unaspected Mars
in their charts. Lord Baden Powell, the founder of Boy Scout Movement had
an unaspected Mars.
Unaspected Jupiter-
Only a few have
an unaspected Jupiter in their chart. They
are lucky and have optimism and good fortune.Such natives
shine no matter what the rest of the chart tells. The subjects usually have a
good sense of humor and lots of self-confidence. They are likeable by all and
find luck and fortune in what others think as misfortune. Famed Singer Janis
Joplin had an unaspected Jupiter in Cancer.
Unaspected Saturn-
The positive
qualities of seriousness, conformity, practicality and
responsibility are projected in the character of an individual who possesses
an unaspected Saturn. Though they may not
be overly charming or popular, they are usually well-trusted and respected.
Unaspected Uranus-
It is very rare to
spot an unaspected Uranus in birthcharts. But its weak aspects cannot be taken for
personal levels. Unaspected Uranus does not
seem to engender the same dynamic, rebellious or
eccentric qualities which are often apparent when aspects do occur. Unaspected Uranus is quietly unique and independent.
It is less excitable and more stable than an aspected one.
Unaspected Neptune-
This enables the
subject to consolidate talents and intuitive abilities while leading a
constructive life.Unaspected Neptune
does not have to face the challenges of difficult aspects and is therefore
allowed more freedom to utilize imagination and inspiration.
Unaspected Pluto-
Those who have this
uncommon placement are intense, well-balanced people who lack the usual
Plutonian need to exert power over others. They are
magnetic and forceful without overbearing. Powerful people are born with
dominant Pluto and great is its presence in their lives that they are
remembered even centuries after their death. Unapsected Pluto
possesses the remarkable capacity for fame or infamy. Queen Elizabeth II, Pop
star Madoona and German Composer Beethoven
have a dominant Pluto in their birthcharts."
As for what it says
for the "Unaspected Sun", it seems too
general, I mean, we are ALL selfish to an extent no matter ... as for success
or fame, I can only relate to that as what I am able to contribute to the world
as a writer, but it's got nothing to do with WANTING fame, so...
This interpretation
is one I can relate to much more :::
"Unaspected Planets
Occasionally, you
will see a planet that is not aspected by
another planet. This means that the major aspects listed above (and planets not
in a parallel/contra parallel relationship- a term having to do with their
north-south latitude positioning, known as declination) are not aspected with another planet. It is almost as if that
planet does not know how to relate in the world. A person with an Unaspected planet must learn to integrate the nature
of that planet into their life. An example of an Unaspected Venus
is a person who seems to have this magnetic charm and beauty,
yet is oblivious to the reaction they receive from people who are
attracted to them."
I didn't even think
about Declinations here, and as I looked at mine from under the
"Additional Tables" option in astro.com, I'm not making heads or
tails of it.
Here's another
interesting interpretation which I can relate to a little more as well :::
"...For example,
an unaspected Sun in Leo located in and
ruling the 10th could easily describe a situation where the abundant ego energy
is desperately searching for a suitable public forum to "strut his
stuff".
Then, if the Sun
forms a Natal Quintile (a 72 degree aspect suggesting
creativity) with the Ascendant, we get the feeling that projecting this strong
public persona is essential to "creating and defining a sense of
self"..."
My Unaspected Sun in Libra is in the 5th House, and it
really has been about issues of the "grand entrance" for me,
especially since I have Uranus & North Node in Leo in my 4th House - Leo is
the Ruler of the 5th House where my Sun is. It's been like, I know I have much
to offer, but still struggling with presentation, etc. Does that make sense?
Here's some more
(which of these interpretations rings true for all of you?) :::
"UNASPECTED
PLANETS
Opinions differ over
the interpretation of unaspected planets.
It is best to learn from experience, but the following guidelines are useful.
First, the planet may be difficult to express. The principle it represents may
be badly integrated with the rest of the personality and may even be neglected.
In complete contrast, the lack of aspects may mean that the planet is
unrestrained by other planets and therefore assumes an exaggerated importance.
Sun unaspected: these people may have a poor sense of self-identity, but may appear to be very egotistical.
Moon unaspected: these people may feel out of touch with their
home, family, emotions and roots, but make strenuous
efforts to overcome the problem.
Mercury unaspected: these people may find it difficult to express
their thoughts, may be quiet, but strive actively to develop intellectual
skills.
Venus unaspected: these people may find it difficult to form close
relationships, but may make great efforts to be
sociable.
Mars unaspected: these people may find it difficult to motivate
themselves but may have uncontrollable energy.
Jupiter unaspected: these people may have Difficulty in creating opportunities, but spend a lot of energy looking for them.
Saturn unaspected: these people may find it difficult to recognize
limitations and cope with difficulties, but may
develop strong self-discipline.
Uranus unaspected: these people may have difficulty in expressing
their personality, either neglecting or exaggerating it.
Neptune unaspected: these people may have difficulty in giving
expression to their imagination and mystical aspirations, but
become very dedicated to artistic work or religious activity.
Pluto unaspected: these people may find it difficult to harness
emotional energy, and may seek emotional commitment
and confrontation."
I hope that my Unaspected Sun in the 5th is not making me egotistical
in order to compensate for my lack of "ego
direction".
This one regarding
the Unaspected Sun is the most accurate one
I've found yet :::
"...An unaspected Sun is an indication that the individual
will need to find a completely new way of using his or her ego to find
something outside the family dynamic to pursue. There is a maverick energy
with unaspected planets, and it often
indicates that a 'new soul' has come into the family to break professional,
social hierarchies. The unaspected Sun
person will find it exceptionally difficult to conform to the family, but will attempt to do so until a turning point
occurs, allowing them to set off in their own direction. Often their father has
not been traditionally paternal, has been a 'friend' or completely absent by
circumstances or choice. There is usually a very strong longing for a father,
or father figure, but because there is no aspect from the Sun to another
planet, there is no clear image of the father in the psyche. Hence, the person has to become their own father, or to become their own
authority. All the words that stem from the Latin auctor - author,
authority, authenticity, and all derivatives are especially significant
for unaspected solar people. They must find
inner validation rather than seeking it from without. This often means long
periods of wandering, looking, seeking and searching
for purpose and direction in life..."
SO TRUE FOR ME!!!
Numinology and the Transcendent Function
As Jung has demonstrated in his studies, the creation of a
numinous con¬sciousness is assisted by the
transcendent function. This is a term I assume he borrowed from Hegel, which he
defines as a “uniting function that transcends [the] tension of opposites.”
Therefore, the transcendent function is a “psychic function that arises from
the tension between con¬sciousness and the
unconscious and supports their union.”9
Since the least aspected planet is
portrayed as an isolated energy (due to lack of aspect interaction), it
symbolizes an energy that is less reflective of such conflicts of opposites. In
that sense, the LAP serves the same role as the transcendent function.
Therefore, its numinous quality is probably not coinciden¬tal.
The LAP serves as a focal point through which several antithetical views (or
energetic tensions) come into parity–since it stands not only aside from them
but, also, above them, transcending their dualism. As such, it is the ter¬tium non datur or
“reconciling third.” “[Nature] acts symbolically in the truest sense of the
word, doing something that expresses both sides, just as a waterfall visibly
mediates between above and below.”10
It is with this in
mind that we speak of a Transcendental or “reconciling” symbol. For it stands
there between two worlds, as a kind of twilight guidepost. It is through its
presence that we discover a telic, purposeful, and forward-moving drive. It
resembles a bridge that links two worlds, simultaneously making them one as it
creates a third transcendent possibility: “a mystery inexpressible and above
all creatures” (Otto).11
Perhaps, aspects not
only help manifest or express a planet’s mean¬ing and
function but they also limit its scope of action.” See his groundbreaking
work, Syn¬chronicity, Science and Soul-Making,
Chicago, Open Court Publications, 1995.
"...the approach
to the numinous is the real therapy and inasmuch as you attain to the numinous
experiences you are released from the curse of pathology."
Carl Jung, C. G. Jung
Letters, vol. 1, letter to P. W. Martin, p.
In alchemy, Mercurius was
envisioned as standing between Sol and Luna–the principle ele¬mental forms of spirit (yang) and soul (yin)–and
providing, through receptive awareness and active transmission of thought, a
mediating function: one providing continual psychic evolution and
stabilization. in mathematics the term “Transcendental Function” refers to a
function involving real and imaginary numbers. “Transcendental Numbers” refers
to “the theory of irrationality, transcendence, and algebraic independence of
various numbers.” From “Number Theory IV: Transcendental Numbers,” Yu V. Nesterenko, N.I. Feldman, Encyclopedia of Mathematical
Sciences, vol. 44.
Traditionally,
least aspected planets (LAPs) are believed
to symbolize an unin¬tegrated or
“on-off” togglelike expression of energy.
My research, however, illustrates the opposite: the least aspected planet is a primary psychological symbol that
helps us to realize what we are meant to accomplish in our life. We can often
see how this operates in the biographies of highly accomplished people. Birth,
travel, or relocation under this line enhances the manifestation of the
least aspected or Tran-scendental energy.
The symbolic qualities associated with the planetary principle in question will
manifest in the forefront of the personality and in the professional life.
In astrocartography, locations under the Primary
Transcendental line point the way to “des¬tined”
encounters, yielding a larger social, cultural, or historical significance.
really excep¬tional historical figures have an even
higher-than-average incidence of certain planets in angular positions than do
historical figures who have contributed less significant things to society. In
other words, while each group rates as statistically higher-than-average, the really exceptional, legendary per¬sonalities exhibit
an even higher incidence of angular planets. Such figures interest me, because
I believe their contributions are rooted in more than just personal sources.
They are destined to accomplish their work through what might be called inspi-ration or grace.2
with those who
realize their potential in extraordinary ways, the Transcendental principle
symbolizes the precise form of spiritual yearning: the spiritual raison d’être
of the person in question. In other words, it signifies a point of numinosity in
the psyche.
With Leading Planets,
the hypo- or hyperactive behavioral tendencies will often interrupt or usurp
the focal point of the individuation pro¬cess symbolized
by the Transcendental Planet. Certainly, this is dangerous enough. But in the
case of an inflated Transcendental, we have an enormously potent concen¬tration of energy that is ordinarily manifested
in everyday life. When the native is too closely identified with this psychic
energy (when he feels as if it is his personal possession or creation), then an
“inflated” point of view (that one is, rather than that one channels the
archetypal force) results in a dangerous existential situation. The biographies
of the above-men¬tioned despots
exemplify such dangers.
Since the
Transcendental is initially experienced as a spiritual longing, normally, the
native does not mistake it for a personal acquisition. Rather, he becomes involved
in the quest to understand and express it, usually in a variety of manners that
require a sustained concentration and devotion. The latter conditions,
indicating a certain “distancing” from the energy, are usually enough to
indicate to anyone with common sense that one does not actually own or create
such functions but, rather, that one’s core energies are the result of a long,
age-old process of heredity and biological evolution, culminating in the
progressive spiri-tual evolution of
mankind. Even if the spiritual view is not consciously embraced, the biological
viewpoint, predominant in our age of materialism, should suffice to ward off
the inflated notion of a personal acquisition of what are obviously
transpersonal characteristics.
And yet, common sense is not all that common. In the inflated psy-chic disposition of our despots, an identification with
transpersonal powers resulted in their believing in, and being seduced by,
their own personal propaganda. Overwhelmed by the numinosity of the
Transcendental force, they expressed only its darkest, most primitive
aspects.
This is enantiodromia visibly
crystallized as external drama. Intrapsychically, enantiodromia continues
to effect its reversals, its acts of nemesis. In the
case of a dictator such as Francisco Franco, whose life seems relatively
untouched by external dramatic reversals, we are left only to imagine the
damage a hypertrophied ego wreaks upon the internal stuff of self and
soul.
For those who are not in any imminent danger of becoming despots,
dictators, or executioners, subtler dangers may lie in store. Whenever the
archetypal yin / yang principles are approached for utilitarian rea¬sons–even if those reasons are so-called spiritual
growth–we are tempting the enantiodromian fates
to challenge our one-sided approach with a rectifying act of nemesis: one that
will produce unforeseen hardship. We practice astrology or channel the creative
muse or communicate with the uncon¬scious simply
because it is the thing to do–in the same spirit of joy that a child plays a
game: a blissful spirit of timeless wonder. To play this game for gain will
always exact its price.4 In the words of the I Ching–which I have here
opened at random: Any deliberate intention of an effect would only destroy the
possibility of producing it.6
the Transcendental
planet represents a modus operandi for wholeness.
The quest for psychological growth is meaningfully reflected in
the astrocartography symbolizes.
Transcendental experiences–events of the most central import in a person’s
life–often occur under the rising, culminat¬ing,
setting, or apparent midnight positions of the least- or second least aspected planets. When these planetary lines appear in
proximity to each other, they create fields over significant geographical
locations. I refer to the combined effect of such energies as Transcendental
Midpoint-Fields (TMF). They often play a role in helping us to realize our
potential.
How do such energies
manifest psychologically?
Couteau: The two
least aspected planets, besides indicating
a locational plexus, portray the essential personality and the
principal motifs in the psychological portrait.
Underaspected planets have been largely ignored or, at
best, given scant atten¬tion. Bil Tierney’s book on aspect analysis is an exception,
and I relied on it when writing about Transcendental Astrology. But their
positive and singular role in determining the life goal and in symbolizing our
central psychic orientation has never before come to
light. Now, I hope this will begin to change.
Besides helping us to achieve balance and wholeness, the symbol of the
least aspected planet posits to our true or
future personality. That’s what the underaspected planet
represents. A spiritual yearning directs us toward a distant, future goal; we
seek what we are becoming. What we seek isn’t yet fully conscious or understood
or worked out or resolved. And that’s why it’s so exciting–we’re giving birth
to an unknown something, and that something is the undiscovered Self.
We couldn’t do that without some help from “above” or “below”–or
wherever “it” is. That’s why I chose the term Transcendental. This planetary
principle symbolizes a psychic energy that links our conscious talents and
concerns with something largely transpersonal or transconscious.
It forms a bridge: a means of transcending dualism, of tran¬scending an
either/or position. Carl Jung often wrote about the tertium non datur or “reconciling third.” In other words, a means
of standing above opposites and of establishing an entirely new ground or
plateau, and upon that level we find the new horizon of the Self.
This is precisely what the Transcendental symbolizes: a focal point in
the psyche, through which opposites are joined in a transcendent union. Again,
this would only be possible if there was something deep within us that
transcended a mere ego structure: and the linear experience of a specific,
personal life. That’s why I speak of inspiration or grace: these are the means
through which the Transcendental principle manifests
in three-dimensional time and space. The Transcendental portrays a key symbol
that we must personify on this journey.
Astrolore: What about overaspected planets?
Couteau: These
symbolize either hypo- or hyperactive psychic tendencies that interfere with a
proper psychic balance or wholeness. Often, they lead to compul¬sive, hubristic behavior. The overaspected principle may be a bit dangerous, espe¬cially later in life, because it represents
tendencies that we’ve relied on too much: habitual behaviors that tend toward
one-sidedness. Such planets symbolize aspects of consciousness that we have
compulsively depended upon. Therefore, in geographical terms, they point to
geographic areas where we may overreach, become inflated, and suffer a fall. I
compare the most aspected planet to an
overcharged circuit that may short-circuit, especially when we relocate to an
area under its domain.
Leading Planet
Intersections signify regions that are especially challenging.
Since the Transcendental
is initially experienced as a spiritual longing, normally, the native does not
mistake it for a personal acquisition. Rather, he becomes involved in the quest
to understand and express it, usually in a variety of manners that require a
sustained concentration and devotion. The latter conditions, indicating a
certain “distancing” from the energy, are usually enough to indicate to anyone
with common sense that one does not actually own or create such functions but,
rather, that one’s core energies are the result of a long, age-old process of
heredity and biological evolution, culminating in the progressive spiri-tual evolution of mankind. Even if the spiritual
view is not consciously embraced, the biological viewpoint, predominant in our
age of materialism, should suffice to ward off the inflated notion of a
personal acquisition of what are obviously transpersonal characteristics.
And yet, common sense is not all that common. In the inflated psy-chic disposition of our despots, an identification with
transpersonal powers resulted in their believing in, and being seduced by,
their own personal propaganda. Overwhelmed by the numinosity of the
Transcendental force, they expressed only its darkest, most primitive
aspects.
Yet for each, an enantiodromian reversal
manifested itself as fate: Musso¬lini was
literally “reversed”: hung upside down; Hitler was forced back into the “under¬ground” of his bunker (i.e., the “underworld” or
unconscious condition), where he shot himself;4 Eichmann was deported and
executed by those he had formerly taken such pride in forcibly deporting and
executing: those upon whom he had projected his own inferior moral nature, by
categorizing them as an “inferior race.”
This is enantiodromia visibly crystallized as external
drama. Intrapsychically, enantiodromia continues
to effect its reversals, its acts of nemesis. In the
case of a dictator such as Francisco Franco, whose life seems relatively
untouched by external dramatic reversals, we are left only to imagine the
damage a hypertrophied ego wreaks upon the internal stuff of self and
soul.
For those who are not in any imminent danger of becoming despots, dictators, or
executioners, subtler dangers may lie in store. Whenever the archetypal yin /
yang principles are approached for utilitarian rea¬sons–even
if those reasons are so-called spiritual growth–we are tempting the enantiodromian fates to challenge our one-sided
approach with a rectifying act of nemesis: one that will produce unforeseen
hardship. We practice astrology or channel the creative muse or communicate
with the uncon¬scious simply because it is
the thing to do–in the same spirit of joy that a child plays a game: a blissful
spirit of timeless wonder. To play this game for gain will always exact its
price.4 In the words of the I Ching–which I have here opened at random:
Any deliberate intention of an effect would only destroy the possibility of
producing it.6
“Again
and again people approach the unconscious for very well defined
utilitarian pur¬poses. You could even say that
wanting to be better off, or wanting to be cured, is in a way still an egoistical approach
... Wanting to be healthy is to a certain extent a legitimate ego wish and
therefore generally the unconscious cooperates with it, because it is
legitimate to want to be normal, but sometimes if the person only wants that
from the unconscious, after a while negative dreams come up showing that it
wants to guide the person further and not just cure the symptom.” “Every
utilitarian approach to the unconscious, or just wanting to make use of it, has
destructive effects, just as, we are now beginning to realize, it has in outer
nature. For if we only exploit our forests, animals, and the minerals in the
earth, then we disturb the biological balance and either we or later
generations have to pay a very big bill. Nature seems
to want to keep its own balance and set its own purposes and have its own
biological whole and does not want to be exploited by one-sided
utilitarian calcula¬tions.” Von Franz,
Individuation and Fairy Tales, pp. 28-29. “Often people approach the
unconscious with an inner utilitarian or power standpoint; they want to exploit
the uncon¬scious in order
to become more powerful themselves, to be healthier, to dominate their
surroundings, or to learn how to get things in their own way [...] When
consciousness assumes such an attitude the unconscious becomes trickster-like
too. The dreams become contradictory, they say Yes and then No, left and then right, and one feels that the arche¬type of the trickster God Mercurius is
dominating the phenomenon of the unconscious, leading the ego in a thousand
ways up the garden path.” Von Franz, Shadow and Evil in Fairytales,
p. 251. Indeed, many astrologers would be wise to heed this ethical approach to
the spirit of occult inquiry.
A Note on the Node:
Because the Nodes are
energetic points and are qualitatively different from the physically present
astronomical planets, it may not be possible to assess the Transcendental
potential of the Node in direct relation to the astrological planets.
Therefore, the Node is probably best gauged separately: for its own inherent
strength or weakness. If the North Node is underaspected,
receiving only one major aspect and no more than three minor aspects (130),
then it may be important to travel to the geographic line of the North Node and
to experience its Transcendental effect, especially if this is within a
Transcendental region and not in proximity to any most aspected lines.
If the North Node receives more than a “130” rating, it should not be
considered Transcendental. (In other words, there is no such thing as a Primary
Transcendental Jupiter and a Secondary Transcendental Node but, rather, either
a Transcendental Node or a non-Transcendental Node, either of which will
accompany a Primary Jupiter (or some other Primary Transcen¬dental Planet)
in the makeup of a native’s Transcendental Astrology.) See my essay on the
“Transcendental Node.”
Couteau: The question
that The Role of the Least Aspected Planet
raises is: how can a renowned intellectual or a famous writer have almost no
natal aspects to Mercury; a world-class inventor have Uranus as a least aspected planet; or a well-known philosopher, such as
Nietzsche, have almost no traditional aspects to Jupiter? Also, why those who
have made such significant cultural or historical contributions so often done
so under the astrocartography lines of their
least aspected planet?
What is the focal
point of the horoscope? Over the course of many years of observation, one
principal symbol has emerged as the most likely candidate: that of the
least aspected planet (LAP).
I have included an
introductory discussion of such things as Transcendental Mid¬point-Fields; most aspected-
or Leading Planet Midpoint-Fields; and Transcendental Intersections (where the
lines of the least aspected or
Transcendental Planets cross).
